This is the first stage therefore the broadest edit of your manuscript. This is me working with you to deconstruct your novel to its more fundamental elements and build it on a strong foundation. A developmental edit focuses on and identifies all the ‘big picture’ problems hidden within your story including:
Pacing problems
Overall structure
Setting
Critiquing and constructive story feedback
Plot analysis and structuring
Character analysis
Chapter by chapter comments and recommendations.
I will work with you and provide direct and honest feedback on your story. I will initially read your manuscript to get an unbiased look, and then we will discuss my impression and your intended vision and how we can align these to let your jewel shine.
It is at this level that inconsistencies are found and fixed, and in no way am I changing the voice of the story - it is your story, I am merely there to shine your jewel so it is not tarnished by an easily fixed mistake.
A developmental edit is done on a completed manuscript, before copyediting and proofreading.
If you wish to work with me while writing your story please contact me about my mentoring services or developmental consulting.
This service is not offered with any other but I am willing to do a further booking if an editorial assessment is wanted, or copy-editing and proofreading.
This a line by line edit of your novel which looks at:
- Repetitive sentences
- Awkward dialogue
- Improving sentence structure and pointing out where the text could flow better
- Pointing out instances of passive voice
- Eliminating ‘purple prose’
- Clarity and consistency
Copy editing refines your story line by line without taking your voice out of the work. This rigorous method provides a greater opportunity to spot specific mistakes such as incorrect facts, story anomalies and inconsistencies. This looks at technical glitches but is not necessarily a proofread – that is the final step.
This is the final ‘safety net’. While often overlooked, this step is just as important. While one spelling mistake can be overlooked, multiple can injure the author. This is the final step, used to catch anything that may have slipped through prior stages, such as:
- Spelling mistakes
- Grammatical errors
